Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
Your first stop in Sullivan’s Island for a great lunch or dinner has to be Poe’s Tavern. If you’re searching for a casual place to grab one of the best burgers in the Charleston area, look no further than this eclectic local dig centered around one time Sullivan’s resident Edgar Allan Poe. Next stop for great margaritas and excellent shrimp tacos: Mex 1 Coastal Cantina, right off the beach.
The Obstinate Daughter is another local favorite and one of the best Sullivan’s Island restaurants. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, and their pizzas and pasta are the top of the line, don’t forget to try their Geechie fries as well! For good old-fashioned southern BBQ, Home Team BBQ is the perfect place to indulge in a rack of ribs, brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and a variety of savory sides with an ice-cold beer. With a light and healthy seafood menu, The Longboard has become the perfect addition to the Sullivan’s Island culinary scene.
Things to Do
It shouldn’t be surprising that the beach and the water are the top of the to-do list here: Sullivan’s Island Beach is the main place in town to grab some sun, lay in the sand, or go shelling. Take a drive down to historic Fort Moultrie and walk out onto the beach at sunset for the most stunning view over downtown Charleston; you may even catch a few dolphins taking in the view too!
If you’re looking for something a little more adrenaline-inducing than sitting on the beach, Sealand Adventure Sports offers SUP tours and rentals, kiteboarding lessons, and bike rentals so that you can cruise the island at your own pace. From the beginning of April to the end of June, the Sullivan’s Island Farmers Market is open Thursdays from 4-7 p.m and offers fantastic locally-sourced goods, produce, and dairy items.
Unique to Sullivan’s Island is the New Year's Day Polar Plunge hosted by Dunleavy’s Pub in support of the Special Olympics. Nearly everyone in town takes part in this exhilarating tradition and celebrates after with a beer at the pub. And every February, there is the Annual Fire Department Oyster Roast to benefit the local fire stations and volunteer firefighters.
